OVERVIEW
No finer course material for math has
been found! Particularly for any one-on-one
tutorial environment such as home schooling, at home under the tutelage of
a trusted tutor or nanny, or enrolled in a special charter school where the education
of your children is a joint venture between parent and school. We have
found these new worktexts as the only consumable math texts
on the market published for the public and non religious private schools
that include all the concepts typically found in hard bound basils!
The advantages of these worktexts over all other curriculum are numerous.
This is the only series that meets all the criteria we established for selecting curriculum. For
example, since there are
only a little over 300 pages, not including tests and activities, there is
plenty of time to review any concepts not readily understood. While there
are a few other worktext series on the market that closely match the general description
as the one adopted by Curriculum Services they are actually
designed for remedial students, despite the fact that this point is not
always highlighted. This matter is addressed due to concern that certain concepts are
lacking and feedback from parents who used those (remedial) worktexts report that
when their children returned to the classroom they were ill prepared for
standard grade-level work. This is in stark contrast to the worktexts
adopted by Curriculum Services which were selected
because, under your guidance, you can lead your children to higher levels of
mathematical achievement and critical thinking skills, and according to
feedback from parents and students, in less than half the time. The
achievement levels of students using our adopted texts shows levels years ahead. While we can also
provide anything including "remedial" worktexts like that described
above plus the popular math textbooks so widely distributed among the home schooling community (consumable for
lower level elementary and hardbound for mid-level and above). We refrain from doing so
as we are committed to providing only the best of the best. Our goal is to
provide curriculum that has the potential to bring your child to greater
levels of achievement, at less time and for less cost. We find that children
are happier when they achieve their goals and have time left over for
fun. This is our third year with this program adopting the course
material shortly after its release.
This is the only math text for these levels
that we have found meets all our criteria. First
and foremost on our list is curriculum must be visually appealing but
not too "busy". (Check out our sample pages below and see for
yourself.) It must also have student appeal while being as self-instructing
as possible. In addition it must be comprehensive and adaptable
to different learning styles. Because we specialize in providing write-in
texts for our text supported courses we focus first on consumable text
books and then, in all fairness, compare them to their hard-bound
counterparts. We were
delighted to discover, once again, that these consumable texts came in first
place in all categories. Because the teacher's edition was not cost effective
a teacher's manual has been created for you. There is also a little known trend
coined by it's opponents as the "New New Math" that we watch
out for. For more information see
our article Math Matters. If after reading Math Matters you
want to learn more on this subject we have an outstanding article that can
be sent to you via fax or E mail. As stated earlier, this math series meets all our criteria! See below.

Our Criteria For Selecting Course
Materials
For All Subject Areas
Course materials must...
be visually appealing but not too busy
have student appeal; be
enjoyable
be consumable where possible; (98% are worktexts)
typically produce higher scores on standardized tests
have the quality of "teachability"; easily understand
be as self-instructing as possible
(age is a factor)
be
comprehensive
be adaptable for different learning styles
have cost effective teacher's
supplies
be the most current possible
not convey values that conflict with family values
not be in line with Goals 2000 (a.k.a. Out-based
Education)
need less time to achieve high academic pursuits
contain a balanced amount, or volume, of material (See below.) |
For Math it must not be the method coined as the "New New Math"
(See above and the article Math Matters.) |
In addition, course materials whether consisting of one component or
several together must offer a balanced amount of work. If, for example,
there is not enough course material it cannot be comprehensive enough,
while too much creates another host of problems. These include not allowing
enough time to cover all the concepts, going over concepts not readily
understood, or hands-on activities. There is also the problem of
student and teacher burn-out, in addition to not having enough time for recreation
and other
family activities. Parent and student feedback is very positive in this
regard. See articles SACC, One Subject a Day, and Testing.

TWENTY

YEARS
IN THE MAKING
Our researched based math program has
arrived! It provides focused instruction, practice, review and
maintenance in the concepts and skills important at your grade level. Its teaching strategies and assessment
techniques that are based on over 25 years of confirmed research
are proven
to be effective with all students. The components reflect
the explicit instruction model with an emphasis on clear instructional
models, guided and independent practice, and on-going assessment. Carefully
sequenced lessons in the student worktext build understanding and mastery.
Problem solving and reasoning skills are emphasized through out.
The teacher's manuals were designed by
Curriculum Services to be easy to use as it provides plenty of support
whether you are new to the role as instructor or a veteran. This support
includes complete answers for the student worktext and test book plus two
schedules to match your teaching style: a weekly schedule and a day to
day schedule. Also included is a ledger size (11" X 17")
schedule for "Student Central". Student Central is a
bulletin board housing all student course schedules, attendance sheets,
Daily Plan Book and so fourth. Its purpose is to foster independence and
easing your load. Despite their outstanding features this
math series, outside our programs, are virtually unknown in the homeschool
community. There are several legitimate reasons for this. They are
listed below.
1)
Because this text is primarily marketed for the public school system the
teacher's edition and test masters are not cost effective
for parent
educators, rendering them impractical in this setting. That all changes
however, when they are part of a complete
program with tests and teacher support materials provided by Curriculum Services.
2) While their are some other publisher's who actively market their
math texts to homeschoolers, this one does not.
3) The optional CD Rom we offer cannot be purchased on an
individually basis.
4) This text is little known as the company does not carry a great
deal of
texts commonly used by home educators.
Course Materials Listed
