| The purpose of
the Language Tune-Up Kit (LTK) At Home is to provide basic reading
skills to non-reading children age 7 and older, teens and adults. These
students require a highly structured approach to learning, which LTK At
Home provides.
Many non-reading students do not respond to traditional teaching methods. Instead, they need a sequential structured phonics method of instruction. They typically require three to ten times the number of usual repetitions to achieve mastery. Until now these teaching methods have been available from only highly trained reading specialists. Parents and individuals that face the challenge of delivering base-level reading instruction to those functionally illiterate can now look to the Language Tune-Up Kit At Home, a programmed instructional platform that applies proven sequential and structured phonics techniques to help students encode the sound-symbol correlation of letters and words. The basis for instructional delivery within LTK At Home is the renowned Orton-Gillingham approach, a highly successful worldwide process used since the 1930s on thousands of students with learning disabilities. This method teaches the basics of sound and word formation before whole meanings. |
Lesson Structure The Language Tune-Up Kit At Home is a self-directed computer-based reading program. While familiarity with the letter names is helpful, no prior reading or computer knowledge is assumed. Easily understood directions and positive feedback encourage success. Adults and teenage students find that age-appropriate content sustains their motivation and interest. When students are learning new material their recall process works best in short spurts of up to fifty minutes. This is approximately the time a student would spend in the program at a sitting during the first few lessons. An advanced student might finish an entire lesson in a hour. A slower student may take a longer time to accomplish the lesson tasks and the repetition of mastery drills keeps the recall process active. Beginning with letters and sounds the student progresses though word building, word attack, word recognition and improvement of comprehension with a self-paced, multi-sensory approach. This method addresses all learning types: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Words and sounds are seen, heard, spoken, and written making the learning experience active rather than passive. The added benefit of acquiring basic computer literacy is a big boost to the learner's self-esteem. |
